The house lights at 9:30 Club glowed pink as fans in pink wigs and ballet tutus filled the sold-out room for Adéla’s Red Bottoms Tour. Fresh off the release of her debut album PRIMA, Adela returned to D.C. for the second time this year after opening for Demi Lovato at Capital One Arena back in April. This time, she was ready to command a stage of her own.
She opened with “KGB,” setting the tone for the night as she and her troupe of dancers marched onto the stage with bold, assertive energy. The stage setup was minimal, centered around a single pink ballet barre, but the performance was anything but. The choreography was precise and demanding, giving her plenty of room to show off the years of dance training. Other highlights included her crowning a young fan the “Baddest Bitch in D.C.” and bringing her onstage for the Swagerina dance after “Ain’t In LA”, and closing out the night with an encore of her latest single, “Nicole Kidman.”
Adéla first gained attention on Netflix’s Pop Star Academy, competing for a spot in the global girl group KATSEYE. Her elimination became one of the show’s more contentious moments, since she was portrayed as one of the hardest-working contestants, and someone who consistently supported the other girls. One thing the show’s judges did get right was recognizing her potential as a solo artist. Her vocals, technical dance and ballet abilities, and distinct songwriting perspective shaped by growing up in Slovakia come together as a perfect recipe for a main pop girl.
